A Russian drone strike near the Ukraine-Poland border has triggered international concern after a passenger train was hit shortly after a diplomatic train carrying former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other European officials had passed through the area.
The incident happened near Yahodyn, a railway station close to the Polish border, as Johnson and other senior figures were traveling from Kyiv toward Poland following the Yalta European Strategy conference. According to Ukraine’s state railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, the diplomatic train had departed ahead of schedule before a Russian drone struck another train on the same railway line. The attack occurred only a short distance from Polish territory.
Ukrainian railway officials said it was highly possible that the diplomatic train carrying Johnson and other European figures had been the intended target. However, that assessment has not been independently established as a confirmed Russian objective. The train that was struck was evacuated as the drone approached, and no casualties were reported. Former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt, who was traveling with Johnson, said their train had passed through the area only minutes before the attack.
The attack nevertheless created a serious security scare. Another train carrying former CIA Director David Petraeus was also at the station when the strike occurred, according to Ukrainian authorities. The incident came during a broader wave of Russian attacks across Ukraine, adding to concerns about the expanding risks facing civilian infrastructure and international visitors traveling through the country.
The proximity of the strike to Poland, a NATO member, has also heightened concern among European officials. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot described the attack as an attempt to intimidate and divide Europeans, while German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius called it a dangerous escalation. Polish officials likewise warned that attacks so close to their territory demonstrate the growing security risks created by the war.
Johnson survived the incident unharmed and condemned the attack. The former prime minister has remained a prominent supporter of Ukraine and has repeatedly called for continued Western assistance.
The episode highlights how Russia’s war in Ukraine continues to create dangers well beyond the immediate battlefield. With attacks increasingly occurring near NATO territory and involving routes used by international officials, the incident has raised fresh questions about European security, diplomatic travel and the potential for further escalation.
