A container ship sailing toward Russia’s Black Sea port of Novorossiysk was seriously damaged in a reported drone attack, leaving one crew member missing and the vessel declared a constructive total loss. According to its operator, Akkon Lines, the incident occurred on August 21 while the Barbados-flagged RMS TEAM was traveling from the Turkish port of Gemlik toward Novorossiysk.
The attack reportedly triggered a major fire aboard the vessel. Flames initially broke out in the ship’s accommodation and engine-room areas before spreading toward the container section, causing extensive damage. The RMS TEAM was carrying 12 crew members when the incident occurred, creating an immediate rescue operation in the Black Sea.
Eleven crew members were rescued by a nearby vessel, according to Akkon Lines. However, one crew member remained missing following the incident. The company said the severity of the damage meant that both the ship and its cargo were considered a constructive total loss, indicating that the cost of repairing the vessel was considered uneconomical compared with its value.
The damaged ship remained a major maritime concern after the attack. Rather than continuing toward its original destination, the RMS TEAM was eventually towed toward Turkey for further assessment and safety measures. On August 31, the vessel arrived at the Turkish port of Samsun under tow.
Footage released after the vessel reached Samsun showed significant destruction across parts of the ship, illustrating the scale of the fire and damage sustained during the incident. The images also highlighted the risks faced by commercial shipping operating in the Black Sea, where the continuing Russia-Ukraine conflict has increasingly affected civilian maritime traffic.
The incident is significant because the RMS TEAM was a commercial container vessel operating on an international route between Turkey and Russia. Although the Black Sea remains an important trade corridor, military activity and attacks involving drones have increased risks for ships traveling through the region.
The attack also demonstrates how the effects of the conflict can extend beyond military targets and directly affect commercial transportation, cargo, and civilian crews.
