Ukraine has launched what is described as Operation Vivaldi, a major counteroffensive north of Lyman that reportedly cleared approximately 75 square kilometers of Russian infiltration positions and restored Ukrainian control over territory including Serednie. The operation highlights Ukraine’s increasing use of electronic warfare alongside conventional assault forces.
A key component of the reported offensive is Ukraine’s new “Protecting Dome” electronic warfare network, which is claimed to have disrupted more than 20,000 Russian drone missions. Mobile electronic-warfare systems reportedly advanced with Ukrainian assault units, helping reduce the effectiveness of Russian reconnaissance and strike drones during frontline operations.
The developments around Lyman come as Russia continues facing challenges in maintaining its manpower levels. According to Ukrainian intelligence cited in the report, Russia has recruited more than 28,000 foreign nationals from over 130 countries. Russian regions are also reportedly increasing financial incentives for new military recruits as Moscow attempts to sustain personnel numbers without relying solely on domestic recruitment.
The broader battlefield situation is also shifting. The Institute for the Study of War has assessed that Ukraine has eliminated most of Russia’s net territorial gains made since March, while Russian positions around strategically important areas such as Lyman and Kupiansk have come under increasing pressure.
The reported developments illustrate how electronic warfare, drone operations, manpower recruitment, and localized counterattacks are becoming increasingly interconnected. If Ukrainian forces can maintain pressure around Lyman while disrupting Russian drone capabilities, the fighting could place additional strain on Russian defensive positions and supply networks across the wider northern Donetsk front.
