President Trump’s administration has taken another major step toward shrinking the Department of Education.
The administration announced Tuesday that responsibility for special education programs will move to the Department of Health and Human Services, while the Department of Justice will take over enforcement of civil rights in schools and universities.
The DOJ will also handle student privacy protections and provide guidance and training to schools.
Education Secretary Linda McMahon said the changes are designed to place responsibilities with agencies she believes are better equipped to handle them.
The move affects two of the Education Department’s most important offices, including the division that oversees billions of dollars in special education grants and the office that investigates discrimination complaints in schools.
