Nothing says confidence in your political record like promising voters $5,000 if they keep your party in power.
President Trump told Americans that every adult citizen would receive a “dividend” if Republicans win both the House and Senate in the midterm elections. The offer may sound attractive during a brutal cost-of-living crisis, but it is not an approved program. Trump presented no bill, no detailed funding source and no timetable for delivering the money. The estimated price could exceed $1 trillion, and the president cannot spend that amount without congressional authorization.
JD Vance has already complicated the promise by suggesting wealthy Americans may be excluded, despite Trump saying every adult citizen would qualify.
Calling this literal vote buying would imply a specific legal violation that has not been established. Politically, however, tying an enormous cash payment directly to one party’s electoral victory deserves serious scrutiny. Americans need lasting relief through affordable housing, lower healthcare costs and higher wages, not another spectacular promise that appears only when Republicans fear losing an election. Show voters the legislation before asking them to believe the check.
