Iran Leadership Crisis: Trump Says ‘Nobody Knows Who Is Running Iran’, Takes A Dig At Mojtaba

President Donald Trump has raised fresh questions about Iran’s leadership, saying “nobody knows” who is currently running the country as the conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran enters its eighth month. Trump said Iran’s top leaders and a second tier of officials have been killed, leaving what he described as uncertainty over Tehran’s command structure.

Trump’s comments reflect growing uncertainty surrounding Iran’s decision-making process following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in earlier strikes. His son, Mojtaba Khamenei, was subsequently named as his successor, but his limited public presence has fueled questions about how much authority he currently exercises. U.S. Vice President JD Vance has similarly described Iran’s leadership as a “very confused system,” saying multiple political and religious factions are involved in decision-making.

Iran has rejected the suggestion that its government lacks effective leadership. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Washington knows who its Iranian counterparts are and understands how the country’s decision-making system operates. He instead blamed what he called contradictory statements from U.S. officials for creating confusion.

Despite uncertainty surrounding the leadership structure, Iran has continued military operations, including strikes against Israel and regional targets. The prolonged conflict has also disrupted energy markets and contributed to higher fuel prices, creating additional economic and political pressure.

The leadership dispute remains significant because identifying Iran’s actual decision-makers is central to any diplomatic effort to end the war. With military tensions continuing and negotiations facing major obstacles, uncertainty over Tehran’s chain of command could further complicate attempts to reach a lasting settlement.
