GOP REDISTRICTING PLAN THREATENS TO OUST FAR-LEFT ‘SQUAD’ MEMBER REP. GREG CASAR AS TEXAS ADDS FIVE TRUMP-WON SEATS

The Texas legislature advanced a bold new congressional map this week that could dramatically reshape the Lone Star State’s political landscape and deliver major gains for Republicans ahead of the 2026 midterms.

The proposed boundaries would add five new districts carried by President Donald J. Trump by 10 points or more in 2024, significantly boosting GOP chances of retaining and expanding their House majority.

Rep. Greg Casar (D-TX), a high-profile member of the progressive ā€œSquadā€ and chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, now risks being drawn out of his current district.

Casar secured his seat in the 2022 midterms with overwhelming 73 percent support, backed by national progressive leaders including Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and fellow Squad member Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY). His 35th District stretches from San Antonio to Austin, a traditionally Democratic corridor once represented by Rep. Lloyd Doggett.

Republicans are also targeting other outspoken Democrats, including Rep. Al Green (D-TX), by potentially dismantling his 9th District entirely.

Casar has consistently aligned with the Squad’s agenda, sponsoring or voting for measures to redirect funding away from police departments and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

On Monday, Casar met with San Antonio officials to criticize ICE operations outside the city courthouse.

Tensions ran high last week during a five-hour public hearing on the redistricting plan at the Texas Capitol. Dozens of speakers voiced opposition; not a single person spoke in favor. The most dramatic moment occurred when District 18 congressional candidate Isaiah Martin was forcibly removed by security after exceeding his two-minute speaking limit. He was later arrested on charges of criminal trespassing, resisting arrest, and disrupting an official meeting.

Gov. Greg Abbott (R) defended the mid-cycle redraw as necessary to address constitutional concerns flagged by the U.S. Department of Justice regarding four Democratic-held, majority-minority districts.Republican members of the House Redistricting Committee engaged minimally with testifying witnesses, at times appearing distracted, which drew sharp criticism from Democrats on the panel.

The new map heavily favors Republicans and could reshape Texas’s congressional delegation for years to come, delivering a clear advantage as the state continues to grow under strong conservative governance.
