Iran fired ballistic missiles at two air bases housing American troops in Jordan before dawn Monday….

Jordan’s military said its air defenses intercepted eight missiles that breached the kingdom’s airspace at dawn Monday and destroyed them before they threatened anyone on the ground. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said it aimed at “technical infrastructure, maintenance facilities, and enemy fighter jet positions” at the King Hussein and Al-Azraq air bases, and claimed “heavy damage.”

The strike was in response to US forces striking two Iranian missile launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz. CENTCOM called it “limited, precise action against IRGC mine-laying forces posing an imminent threat” to shipping. The Revolutionary Guard said that strike killed and wounded a number of its fighters and Iranian civilians, and gave no figure.

On August 1, Trump said he had agreed to “hold off” on strikes in Iran at the request of American allies in the region. Twenty-nine days later he restarted them.

Congress has voted to end this war twice and been ignored twice. The Senate passed a war powers resolution 50-48 on June 23, with Republicans Bill Cassidy, Susan Collins, Rand Paul and Lisa Murkowski crossing over. The House passed another 214-208 on July 23. Neither is binding, and Trump has never asked Congress to authorize the war that started on February 28.

Six months of it have shut the Strait of Hormuz, which before the war carried about a quarter of the world’s oil. Roughly 400 ships and 6,000 seafarers are still stranded in the Persian Gulf, unable to leave safely. The UN’s shipping agency has verified 70 attacks on international vessels and at least 19 seafarers killed.

Diesel in the US now averages $5.47 a gallon, nearly $2 higher than a year ago.
