Ukraine has reportedly retaken up to 250 square kilometers of territory north of Lyman in a major counteroffensive along the Lyman–Donetsk frontline, potentially marking a significant shift in the fighting. Ukrainian forces are said to have recaptured around five settlements while expanding clearing operations into several additional areas, forcing Russian troops to retreat toward the Zherebets River.
The advance threatens Russia’s year-long Lyman salient, which had served as an important northeastern route toward Sloviansk. As Ukrainian forces pushed forward, Russian units reportedly abandoned exposed positions and pulled back, creating pressure on Moscow to reorganize its defenses and logistics in the region.
Ukraine’s operation appears to have relied heavily on coordinated drone warfare. Reconnaissance drones identified Russian troop movements, supply routes, artillery positions and communications. FPV drones then targeted key positions and disrupted Russian logistics before Ukrainian assault units moved in to capture and secure the territory. Once positions were taken, the drone network advanced with the troops, allowing the cycle to continue.
Units reportedly involved include Ukraine’s 3rd Corps, 66th Mechanized Brigade, 3rd Assault Brigade, and the K-2 and Achilles drone units. Their approach combined surveillance, precision drone strikes, infantry assaults and mechanized operations in a coordinated sequence designed to isolate and overwhelm Russian positions.
Lyman is strategically important because it connects northern Donetsk and southern Kharkiv while providing access toward the Sloviansk–Kramatorsk defensive belt. A collapse of the Russian salient could force Moscow to rebuild its defensive network, relocate artillery and drone assets, reinforce logistics routes and commit additional reserves.
Russian military bloggers have reportedly acknowledged withdrawals while criticizing overly optimistic battlefield reports. Meanwhile, Russian claims surrounding Sviatohirsk were challenged after 3rd Corps commander Andrii Biletskyi released footage from the area, highlighting the continuing dispute between Moscow’s battlefield claims and developments reported from the front.
Russia now faces difficult choices: rebuild the Lyman salient, redirect its offensive toward Sloviansk from the east, or pull reserves from other sectors. Any option could give Ukraine additional time to consolidate its gains and force Russian forces to fight again for territory they previously spent months capturing.
