Japan is undergoing a significant transformation of its defense posture as tensions with China increase around disputed areas in the East China Sea. The report highlights Chinese coast guard and military activity near the Senkaku Islands, which Japan administers and China also claims. These encounters have contributed to Tokyo’s growing emphasis on long-range strike capabilities, stronger alliances, and advanced airpower.
Japan has introduced or planned systems capable of striking targets at extended ranges, including Tomahawk cruise missiles and domestically developed stand-off weapons. It is also expanding its F-35 fleet, including F-35B aircraft designed for short takeoff and vertical landing operations. These capabilities are intended to strengthen Japan’s ability to respond to threats from greater distances and operate from dispersed locations.
The report also emphasizes cooperation between Japanese and U.S. F-35 forces through secure data-sharing networks. The Multifunction Advanced Data Link, or MADL, allows compatible aircraft to exchange information while maintaining low-probability-of-intercept characteristics. Combined with distributed basing concepts, including operations from smaller or improvised airfields, such networks could increase the survivability and effectiveness of allied aircraft during a conflict.
Japan is simultaneously deepening security cooperation with partners including Australia, the Philippines, South Korea, and the United States. These relationships expand opportunities for exercises, intelligence sharing, logistics, and coordinated deterrence across the Indo-Pacific.
However, claims that Japan has completely neutralized China’s military power or that an allied “blockade” is inevitable go beyond what current capabilities demonstrate. China retains substantial air, naval, missile, and industrial capacity. The developments instead indicate a continuing shift in the regional balance, with Japan placing greater emphasis on long-range capabilities, dispersed operations, and integrated alliances.
