A politically charged dispute erupted after federal law enforcement raids targeted several daycare centers and related businesses in Minneapolis, Minnesota, as officials and commentators argued over who deserved credit and who was responsible for allowing alleged fraud to continue.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz posted on social media after the raids, saying the operation showed that fraud in Minnesota would be punished. He stated that cooperation between state and federal agencies had helped uncover suspicious activity and that joint investigations were effective when agencies shared information. Walz said state agencies had identified irregular behavior and referred it to federal authorities, describing the raids as proof that the system was working.
His comments quickly drew backlash from federal officials. FBI Director Kash Patel publicly disputed Walz’s characterization, saying the FBI, Department of Justice, and Department of Homeland Security had planned and executed the search warrants. Patel criticized Walz for appearing to claim credit for an operation that federal agencies led, while also suggesting fraud problems had grown under Walz’s governorship.

Complicating Walz’s claims, the City of Minneapolis posted that it was not involved in the federal operations and that, at the time of the announcement, the Minneapolis Police Department had not been asked to assist with executing federal warrants. The raids also revived attention around independent journalist Nick Shirley, who previously released viral videos alleging large-scale fraud tied to Minnesota daycare centers and transportation companies. His first report focused on daycare facilities that he claimed appeared inactive or closed despite receiving public funding. According to platform metrics, the video attracted massive online attention and increased public scrutiny of state oversight systems.
Supporters of Shirley praised him for exposing problems they believed mainstream institutions ignored. Critics, however, questioned his methods and conclusions. Several media organizations characterized his reporting as politically motivated or insufficiently substantiated. Shirley responded by defending his investigations and promising additional revelations.
The controversy highlights how allegations of fraud can become intertwined with political narratives.
