Democrat Candidate Arrested After Cops Find Cocaine

Andrew Dezelan, a Democratic candidate for the Indiana State Senate, was reportedly arrested in Fishers, Indiana, after police responded to complaints about someone going door-to-door in a residential neighborhood. According to court filings and local reports, Dezelan faces charges of cocaine possession and resisting law enforcement following the Sunday evening incident.

Authorities said officers were dispatched around 8 p.m. after a resident contacted police about a person soliciting or canvassing in the area. When officers arrived, they approached Dezelan near his vehicle and questioned him about his presence in the neighborhood. Dezelan allegedly told officers that he had permission from a homeowners association representative to canvass there as part of campaign outreach.

Police reports cited by news outlets state that officers observed Dezelan behaving erratically, noting rapid speech, excessive sweating, and pinpoint pupils—symptoms they believed could indicate intoxication. Officers then asked him to step out of the vehicle so he could be detained for further investigation.

According to the affidavit, Dezelan initially put the vehicle in reverse before eventually complying with commands. Officers then attempted to take him into custody. A brief struggle reportedly followed, after which police brought him to the ground and placed him in handcuffs.

A subsequent search of the vehicle allegedly uncovered a small plastic bag containing a white powdery substance. Authorities said the substance field-tested positive for cocaine. Dezelan was then booked on charges related to possession of cocaine and resisting law enforcement. Formal court proceedings are expected to determine whether those charges are upheld.

Dezelan, 38, previously served as policy director for the Indiana Senate Democratic Caucus for more than a decade, according to his campaign materials. His campaign biography says he entered the race to address issues facing retirees, Medicare recipients, and small business owners. He is one of several Democratic candidates seeking the nomination in Indiana Senate District 31, where multiple Republicans are also competing.

The arrest has drawn attention because it occurred during active campaign season and involved a candidate engaged in neighborhood canvassing, a common grassroots election activity. Neither Dezelan nor his campaign had publicly responded in the provided text.

The latter half of the article shifts away from the Indiana case and discusses broader Democratic primary politics in Illinois and national polling for 2028 presidential candidates. Those sections are unrelated to the arrest itself.

For now, the key issue remains the pending legal case in Hamilton County, where prosecutors and the court system will evaluate the allegations. As with all criminal charges, Dezelan is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
