Downed F-15E Crew Member Rescued After Evading Capture in Iran

According to Axios, citing officials familiar with the situation, the Weapons System Officer (WSO) of a U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle shot down over southern Iran survived the incident and was successfully rescued. The officer reportedly suffered injuries after ejecting from the aircraft on Friday but remained mobile.

Following ejection, the WSO evaded capture for more than a day in mountainous terrain, demonstrating survival training and endurance under hostile conditions. U.S. forces conducted a Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) operation, ultimately locating and extracting the officer early Sunday.

The incident highlights both the risks faced by aircrews operating in contested environments and the complexity of recovery missions behind enemy lines. It also underscores the importance of CSAR capabilities in ensuring personnel recovery during active conflict. The status of the second crew member has not been fully clarified.
