Ashley Biden, daughter of former President Joe Biden, has filed for divorce from her husband, Dr. Howard Krein, after more than 13 years of marriage. Court records show the filing was submitted in Philadelphia’s Court of Common Pleas, though the reasons behind the separation have not been publicly disclosed because divorce records in the city remain private. Shortly after the filing, Ashley shared a reflective Instagram post featuring Beyoncé’s song “Freedom” and a message about “new life” and “new beginnings,” which many interpreted as a sign of personal transition and emotional renewal.
Ashley and Krein were introduced by Ashley’s late brother, Beau Biden, and married in Delaware in 2012. Ashley previously spoke warmly about the wedding during the 2020 Democratic National Convention, describing her father’s emotional involvement in the preparations and highlighting his personal side as a parent.
At the same time, Joe Biden continues to face political and legal scrutiny regarding his use of an autopen to sign official documents during his presidency. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer has questioned whether some pardons and executive actions issued late in Biden’s presidency could face legal challenges if staff members authorized documents without direct presidential review. Legal commentators, including Alan Dershowitz, have raised constitutional questions about whether autopen signatures fully satisfy legal requirements for presidential actions.
Concerns surrounding Biden’s mental fitness have also resurfaced following criticism of his 2024 debate performance and references in Special Counsel Robert Hur’s report describing moments of memory lapses. Biden has defended his actions, insisting he personally approved every pardon issued during his administration, even if aides handled portions of the signing process.
