Investigators in Tucson, Arizona are expanding their search in the ongoing disappearance case of Nancy Guthrie, focusing on a potential key development that may have occurred weeks before her abduction. Authorities with the Pima County Sheriff’s Office announced that they are now examining activity from January 11, 21 days prior to Guthrie being taken from her home on February 1. Officials say the significance of that date remains unclear but believe digital and forensic analysis conducted with the FBI suggests something important may have happened around that time.
Sheriff Chris Nanos emphasized that the January 11 lead is still speculative and that investigators have not confirmed any concrete link between that date and the disappearance. Despite this, law enforcement has asked the public to review any video footage, digital records, or observations from a wide window between January 1 and February 2, with particular attention to January 11 and January 24, which are also being treated as potential dates of interest.
The case has drawn intense scrutiny as officials continue to analyze surveillance footage, including a video showing a masked man near Guthrie’s home in the early hours of February 1. Investigators believe that incident is directly tied to the abduction, though they acknowledge there is no timestamp on some footage, complicating efforts to determine exact timing. Authorities say the suspect disabled or removed the doorbell camera during the incident, which is the primary reason they associate the footage with the night of the disappearance.
Additional forensic evidence has been collected, including DNA from a glove found at the scene and traces of blood outside the residence. However, officials have not publicly confirmed whether the DNA has produced a usable lead. Guthrie’s pacemaker app reportedly disconnected from her phone at 2:28 a.m., shortly after she was last seen, and her phone was later discovered inside the home.
The investigation has also explored possible ransom activity, with officials reviewing letters that demanded cryptocurrency payments. It remains unclear whether these communications are legitimate or connected to the abduction.
Experts and investigators have speculated that the suspect may have conducted surveillance on multiple weekend nights, possibly suggesting planning or reconnaissance. Some analysts have even suggested the possibility of multiple individuals being involved, though law enforcement has not confirmed this theory.
Authorities have ruled out Guthrie’s family as suspects, while her relatives continue to express hope for her safe return.
