Following remarks by UK Defence Secretary John Healey, the UK Ministry of Defence reported heightened monitoring activity in response to Russian naval movements near critical infrastructure in Northern European waters.
According to the ministry, NATO partners increased surveillance of Russian maritime activity in the North Sea after concerns were raised about potential undersea operations near energy and communications infrastructure. Officials emphasized that such infrastructure is considered strategically vital, and that routine monitoring has been intensified in response to evolving security conditions.
Separately, the UK Ministry of Defence stated that it, alongside allied NATO forces, shadowed two vessels identified as part of Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” while they were escorted through the English Channel by the Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich. The ships were tracked closely as they passed through internationally significant shipping lanes, a corridor frequently used for both commercial and military transit.
Defence officials described the operation as part of ongoing NATO maritime awareness efforts designed to ensure transparency and reduce the risk of miscalculation in congested waters. No direct confrontations were reported, and the monitored passage proceeded without incident.
The developments underscore continuing tensions between NATO members and Russia, particularly in maritime domains where strategic infrastructure and shipping routes intersect. UK officials reiterated that allied forces will continue coordinated surveillance to protect critical infrastructure and maintain stability in the region.
