Michael Joseph Jackson was an American singer, songwriter, dancer, and philanthropist who became one of the most influential entertainers in modern history. Known as the “King of Pop,” Jackson transformed popular music through his groundbreaking performances, innovative music videos, and global cultural impact. His contributions to music, dance, and fashion made him one of the most recognizable figures of the 20th century.
Born on August 29, 1958, Jackson was the eighth child of the Jackson family. He began performing at the age of six as the lead singer of the Jackson 5, quickly gaining national attention. His transition to a solo career brought even greater success, beginning with the critically acclaimed album Off the Wall in 1979.
Jackson achieved worldwide superstardom with Thriller in 1982, which remains the best-selling album in history. The music videos for songs such as “Billie Jean,” “Beat It,” and “Thriller” revolutionized the music video industry and helped break racial barriers on television. He also popularized dance moves including the moonwalk, the robot, and the anti-gravity lean.
His later albums, including Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991), and HIStory (1995), produced numerous hit singles and strengthened his international popularity. His final studio album, Invincible (2001), became one of the most expensive albums ever produced.
Despite his achievements, Jackson’s personal life attracted intense media attention. His changing appearance, private lifestyle, and relationships became subjects of public scrutiny. In 1993, he faced allegations of child sexual abuse that were settled outside of court. In 2005, he was acquitted of additional charges following a highly publicized trial.
While preparing for his planned comeback concerts titled This Is It, Jackson died on June 25, 2009, from a propofol overdose administered by his physician, Conrad Murray. His death generated worldwide mourning, record-breaking internet traffic, and a major increase in music sales.
Jackson sold more than 500 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time. He earned 13 Grammy Awards, numerous American Music Awards, and multiple other honors, including induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice. Beyond music, he donated hundreds of millions of dollars to charitable causes, leaving a lasting legacy as both an entertainer and humanitarian.
