A fast-moving brush fire swept through part of Layton, Utah, on Tuesday afternoon, damaging homes, forcing evacuations, and prompting a large emergency response.
Although the fire burned approximately seven acres, officials said its impact was significant because it spread into a densely populated neighborhood.
According to fire officials, one mobile home was completely destroyed, while a storage shed was also lost in the blaze. Several nearby homes sustained moderate damage, and eight mobile homes remain without electricity as crews work to repair damaged utility lines.
The fire ignited in an area between a local college campus and neighboring mobile home communities, leading authorities to order evacuations to protect residents as flames advanced. Around 70 firefighters responded to the incident, working quickly to stop the fire’s forward progress and prevent additional structures from being destroyed. Crews remain at the scene to monitor for hot spots and ensure the fire does not reignite.
To assist those displaced by the fire, the American Red Cross opened an evacuation shelter at Northridge High School, where affected residents can access food, water, and other essential resources while officials assess temporary housing needs.
Authorities praised the swift response of firefighters and first responders, noting that their rapid actions likely prevented the fire from becoming far more destructive. Residents living near the affected area are encouraged to stay informed through official updates and follow any remaining safety instructions as recovery efforts continue.
