President Donald Trump announced that Secretary of State Marco Rubio will represent the United States at Russia-Ukraine peace talks expected to take place in Istanbul,
Turkey, on Thursday. The announcement came during Trump’s speech to Saudi leaders and business executives in Riyadh on the opening day of his three-country Middle East tour.
Speaking about the upcoming negotiations, Trump expressed cautious optimism, saying the talks could produce positive results. He confirmed that Rubio, along with other U.S. officials, would attend the discussions on America’s behalf, emphasizing the administration’s continued support for diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Trump’s statement followed remarks he made a day earlier at the White House, where he suggested he might personally travel to Turkey if he believed his presence would help secure a breakthrough. “I would fly there if I thought it would be helpful,” he told reporters. However, during his remarks in Saudi Arabia, Trump gave no indication that he planned to attend the talks himself.
A presidential visit to Istanbul would present significant logistical and security challenges because of the limited time available to organize such a trip while Trump is already engaged in a high-profile diplomatic tour of the Middle East.
Rubio accompanied Trump during his visit to Saudi Arabia, where they met with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman alongside other senior U.S. officials. The peace talks in Istanbul are viewed as another opportunity to advance negotiations aimed at reducing hostilities in Europe’s largest and deadliest conflict since World War II.
Although expectations remain cautious, the participation of senior American officials underscores Washington’s ongoing interest in supporting diplomatic efforts to achieve a negotiated settlement.
