The contrast couldn’t be clearer.
Trump says Ukraine has to “submit” if it wants a deal and peace. Mark Carney’s message is the exact opposite: Ukraine will not be forced into submission, and Canada intends to stand beside it for the long haul.
Whatever your position on the war, there’s a fundamental question here that shouldn’t get lost in the politics: what kind of peace are we actually talking about?
There is a difference between negotiating an end to a war and telling the country that was invaded that it simply has to surrender to the demands of a more powerful neighbor. A ceasefire may stop the shooting temporarily, but a settlement that leaves one side feeling coerced and defenseless can create the conditions for another conflict later.
Carney is making Canada’s position unmistakable. Ukraine’s future, territory and security cannot simply be decided over its head because other countries are tired of the war.
And politically, Carney isn’t exactly tiptoeing around Trump either. Again and again, he’s responding with a completely different vision of how allies should treat Ukraine.
Trump talks about submission. Carney talks about partnership.
You don’t have to agree with every Canadian policy to recognize how striking that difference is.
Mark Carney certainly isn’t backing away from the fight.
