Sen. John Fetterman appeared on Fox News and criticized what he described as major U.S. media outlets “carrying water for Iran,” arguing that coverage of Iran is often shaped by political bias rather than a full accounting of the country’s actions. Speaking with host Jesse Watters, Fetterman said he could not speak for other Democrats but suggested that some media narratives downplay Iran’s behavior while focusing heavily on criticism of U.S. policy.
Fetterman emphasized that Iran has a long record of hostile actions and said the United States should continue to hold the country accountable. He described America as “a force of good in the world” and argued that reporting should reflect Iran’s conduct as well as U.S. decisions.
The interview also revisited a controversial U.S. military strike in Iran that reportedly hit a school building. Early reports indicated significant casualties, though later assessments suggested the strike was based on faulty intelligence and mistaken targeting data. The incident prompted calls from nearly all Senate Democrats for an investigation, but Fetterman was the only Democrat who did not sign the letter. He said he supported investigating the strike but disagreed with framing it as evidence of a broader unjust war.
During a separate CNN interview referenced in the discussion, Fetterman defended U.S. military operations and pushed back against characterizations of the conflict as a “war of choice.” He said he supports accountability for mistakes but maintains that American actions should be viewed in the context of Iranian aggression.
Fetterman also contrasted media attention on the school strike with what he sees as less emphasis on alleged Iranian actions against civilians. He argued that some outlets focus more heavily on criticizing the United States while not giving equal weight to violence attributed to Iran. When challenged on CNN’s coverage, he said he does not regularly watch the network and was speaking more broadly about “left-leaning media.”
His remarks highlight ongoing divisions within both political and media circles over how U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East is portrayed, particularly regarding Iran. While Fetterman broke with many Democrats in his response to the incident, he also acknowledged the tragedy of civilian casualties and said that any confirmed errors by the military should be addressed.
